I got up. Walked out to my car. And drove over to his dorm.

"DUDE, how did you do this in 3 hours?"

He was as confused as I was.

"What do you mean?"

I asked Zack if I could watch him edit the other video I'd sent him.

He wanted lunch first.

So we got burgers... $48 worth of burgers and fries to be exact.

About an hour later, we got back to the dorm, and I watched over his shoulder as he edited the next video.

I learned more in that next hour than I'd learned in the previous year.

• He used templates for things I'd been trying to do manually.
• He used software I didn't even know about.
• He used techniques I'd never learned, even after years of amateur production and 50+ hours of watching editing tutorials on Youtube.

I told him afterward that he should make editing tutorials for Youtube.

He just shrugged and said, "Nah, everyone knows this stuff," and started up World of Warcraft.

Welp, I tried.

But this got me thinking... what other parts of video production am I wasting time and effort on, simply because I don't know any better?

So I DM'd a local videographer who I followed on Instagram and asked if I could shadow her on her next shoot.

She asked if I'd be willing to do some B-roll for her in exchange and I said, "Absolutely!"

I learned nearly as much shadowing Grace as I did from Zack.

• She used movement to make her footage WAY more dynamic than mine.
